Itinerary
Upon arrival, our staff will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Istanbul. Your journey begins there. Meals: None. |Additional Charges: Additional nights in Istanbul, 1 additional charge (required if no rooms are available)
Our journey begins this morning with a full-day tour of Istanbul. This historically important city was located on her two continents and played an important role in the development of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Visit the 17th-century Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia Museum, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art, and the racetrack. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport to catch a flight to Izmir, from where you will travel to the Mediterranean town of Kusadasi, where you will be based for the next two nights.
After breakfast, drive to the Roman ruins of Ephesus. The city was once home to 250,000 people and is considered one of the best preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean. We visit the Temple of Artemis and explore the ancient marble streets of this abandoned Greek and Roman city. This afternoon we will visit the fruit wine village of Sirince and learn about the history of carpet weaving in Turkey.
This morning we head east to Pamukkale with its famous white limestone terraces known as travertines. Pamukkale means "cotton castle" and the naturally occurring geology here has produced cloud-like formations not found anywhere else. Then drive to the ancient city of Hierapolis and enjoy a dip in the thermal pools between the ancient columns, where the Romans used the pools for healing.
Travel back in time today as you follow the ancient Silk Road to Konya. Before arriving in Konya, Sultanhanihe stops at a caravanserai to learn more about the history of this important trade route. There we plan to visit the Mevlana Museum, the former home of the original Mevlebi Melodic Monks. Tonight is a fun and entertaining evening of Turkish folklore (local price).
Today we set out to explore the beautiful and surreal landscapes of Cappadocia. This bizarre setting like no other in the world offers a fairy-tale landscape filled with improbable rock formations and underground villages. Also known as the Jewel of Turkey, embark on a full tour to explore the underground churches and forts used by Christians to escape persecution over 1000 years ago.
We wake up early this morning and head to Ankara, today's capital of Turkey. Visit the Mausoleum of Ataturk, the famous mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, before returning to Istanbul by land. This is a long day's drive, but if you wish, we can arrange an upgrade to a domestic flight from Kayseri, Cappadocia (contact us for current times and prices).
Today in Istanbul you will have time for some final sightseeing and shopping before being transferred to your departure airport.
